CLACKAMAS, Ore. — The excavator was still running when they got there, say deputies from the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office. Last week, law enforcement responded to a burglary call at the US Bank branch at SE 117th Avenue and Sunnyside Road. The call came just after 4 a.m., and by the time officers arrived, the machine had been abandoned.
The excavator itself was stolen from a nearby construction site, and used to bust into two different ATMs outside the building - and possibly one SUV. The building itself sustained tens of thousands of dollars' worth of damage.
This isn't the first time nearly robberies nearly identical to this one have happened. Excavators have been used to break into ATMs over the past decade several times in other states. Florida, Ohio, and Maryland banks also fell victim to similar efforts. A stolen trackhoe was recently used to rob a bank near Toronto, Canada.
The amount of cash stolen in Clackamas has not been released and no arrests have been made.
